Case · Trawler · February 2025

Myggenes: scratches inside and out

The windows on the new trawler Myggenes were protected with film during the build. When the film was removed incorrectly, it left scratches on both the inside and the outside of the glass. In February 2025 we ground and polished about 30 windows at Karstensens Skibsværft in Skagen – about 10–12 days of work.

Håkon: scratches inside and out

Like Myggenes, the new trawler Håkon ÞH-250 had windows scratched inside and outside when the protective film from the build was removed incorrectly. In April 2025, in the port of Skagen, we ground and polished about 46 windows over 14 days and finished all windows with a protective glass coating.

Honest assessment

When restoration works – and when replacement is necessary

Can typically be restored

  • Surface scratches, including wiper and cleaning marks
  • Salt and limescale deposits
  • Stains, haze and water spots
  • Scratches and marks from refit and yard work

Needs assessment or cannot be restored

  • Deep scratches closer than approx. 7–8 cm to the frame cannot always be removed without risk of optical distortion
  • Welding spatter can sometimes be removed, but the result depends on how deep the pits are – we rarely recommend it
  • Cracks and other structural damage – the glass must be replaced
  • Plexiglass and acrylic – we only work with glass

Can you feel the scratch with a fingernail? Fine scratches that cannot be felt are polished with cerium oxide. Deeper scratches are ground first with Mirka Abranet and Abralon abrasives, then polished back to full clarity with cerium oxide.

The process

How a marine glass job works

  1. Photos. Send photos of the damaged windows. The assessment is free.
  2. Assessment. We identify the type and depth of the damage and tell you whether restoration is possible.
  3. Planning. We agree on time and access – on board while the vessel is in port, or during a yard stay.
  4. Masking. Frames, seals and surroundings are protected with tape and film.
  5. Grinding and polishing. Fine scratches are polished with cerium oxide. Deeper scratches are first ground out with Mirka Abranet and Abralon – the glass turns milky and matt – and then polished back to full clarity with cerium oxide.
  6. Inspection and documentation. The result is checked with light and on video for optical distortion, and documented with photos and video before and after.

Optional: glass coating. After polishing, the glass can be given a protective nanocoating that makes it easier to keep clean.

Recommendation

What our clients say

Christian Meyer Poulsen, Senior Technical Superintendent · LinkedIn recommendation, marts 2026

“During a dock stay of one of Fjord Line’s ferries, we used WillFlo to polish and coat the ship’s windows. The work was carried out with a highly satisfactory result. WillFlo showed a high level of expertise and a thorough approach, restoring even heavily worn and weathered glass surfaces to a markedly improved optical clarity. […] We can give WillFlo our clear recommendation for similar work within polishing and surface treatment of marine glass.”

FAQ

Questions from shipyards and vessel operators

Can scratched ship windows be restored?

Often, yes. Surface scratches, deposits and stains can usually be polished away. Whether it is possible depends on the depth and position of the damage, so we always assess the glass first.

Can the glass be polished on board?

Yes. We work on board while the vessel is in port, or at the shipyard during a yard stay.

Where do you work?

We work in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

When is replacement necessary?

When the glass is cracked or has other structural damage, when deep scratches sit too close to the frame, or when the window is made of plexiglass or acrylic.

Can the glass be protected afterwards?

Yes. After polishing we can apply a glass coating that makes the surface easier to keep clean.

What information do you need from us?

Photos of the damage, the vessel name and type, the port or shipyard, the number of windows and your preferred timeframe.
